STEVE BURCH, CO-FOUNDER, WINEMAKER
Born in Ohio, Steve traveled to California to study winemaking at UC Davis in 1994. While earning his degree, Steve worked in 4 star restaurants around Northern California as well as some of Napa Valley’s most storied wineries. After earning his degree in Viticulture and Enology in 1998, he worked with Robert Mondavi making small lot wines from special research vineyards to improve overall quality across multiple wine brands. Shortly thereafter, he was recruited by the team at Flora Springs to oversee the cellar and wine production at this legendary Napa Valley winery.
After the birth of his two children, Steve and his wife Marsha built their own winery in the Sierra Foothills. Burch Hall wines generated acclaim throughout California as well as being served in some of Manhattan's finest restaurants.
Seeing the potential for custom crush and direct sales, Steve took the reins at a small company specializing in this emerging market. Shortly after he expanded to California Shiners where he oversaw all production, marketing and sales for many key celebrity clients including Adam Carolla and recording artist E40. It is here where Steve honed the skills needed to produce wines on a large scale without compromising quality. E40’s brand Earl Stevens Selections sold over 100,000 cases in its first year!
Currently Steve is president of Burch Steiner Beverage Group, which produces unique wine-based beverages and custom crush wines in conjunction with S&L vineyards. With over 8,000 acres of estate vineyards at his disposal throughout California, Steve is in a unique position to create wines to both specific styles as well as specific price points. He is an expert in wine production, brand creation, production management and logistics.
THOMAS STEINER, CO-FOUNDER, SALES & MARKETING
A California native, Thomas has been in or around the wine business for nearly 40 years. Starting out in restaurant service, he rose to Maitre d’Hotel for Red Lion Inns in his early twenties and moved on to wine sales in the mid-1980’s, serving as Director of Sales and Marketing for Ehlers Lane Winery and S. Anderson in the Napa Valley. He worked for Fetzer Vineyards as National Sales Coordinator and as cellar staff for Christian Brothers Winery.
Offered the opportunity, Thomas worked/studied as a Wine Merchant for internationally recognized food & wine authority Darrell Corti at Corti Brothers in Sacramento for two years, before establishing Enotria - his own restaurant and wine bar in 1995. The restaurant was awarded a four-star rating by the Sacramento Bee for each of the three years under Thomas’ ownership and he was nominated Sacramento’s 1996 Restaurateur of the Year by the California Restaurant Association. Sunset Magazine ranked Enotria as one of the Top Three Wine Bars in Northern California in 1997.
Having spent the last 15-years working in software development for Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, Charles Schwab, and Wells Fargo, Thomas continued to consult from time to time to restaurants on their beverage programs, and to craft breweries and boutique wineries, on marketing, distribution, and sales.
With the advent of the Burch Steiner Beverage Group, Thomas is looking to present interesting, distinctive, and delicious products to the food & beverage, and wine and spirit retail trades. In the spirit of partnership, we hope that our beverages will find a niche in the creative imagination of restaurant and bar beverage directors, and their staff, as they look to meet the demands of ever-expanding tastes from a ever-growing, more sophisticated consumer market.
